Hello. I have a question about the volunteer firefighter flashing green lights. I’m just wondering the rules regarding them. If I see a vehicle coming with the green light, are we supposed to treat them as a regular police car or do we only pull to the side of them road if it is safe for us? I thought they have to follow all the regular rules of the road regardless as well.
Thanks, Erin
Good Morning Erin,
Excellent question regarding the volunteer firefighters and the flashing green lights, as that is something we do then to see a lot of on our highways in Chatham-Kent.
First rule for flashing Green lights comes from the Highway Traffic Act – Section 62(16) which states that only a Firefighter within the meaning of the Fire Protection and Prevention Act, or a prescribed volunteer that is engaged in a prescribed activity can use the flashing green lights.
Yes vehicles with their flashing Green lights activated MUST obey the rules of the road.
Although there is no provision in the highway traffic act for having to stop for these vehicles, this is most commonly done out of courtesy for the volunteers.
