Under the current COVID rules I have not had to renew my plates. How long does that last? Will I have to renew before the year expires? Or if go more than a year will I get that year for free? Can I be ticketed for this?
Hi John,
You are correct that currently under COVID-19 Exemptions, the Ministry of Transportation/Service Ontario has provided extensions on the following items (From the Service Ontario Website)
Extended expiry date
You may not need to renew your product(s) at this time.
“Products that expired on or after March 1, 2020, have an extended expiry date until further notice. We will notify you when it is time to renew.
This includes your:
- licence plate sticker
- driver’s licence
- health card
- Ontario Photo Card
- accessible parking permit
- many more products”
We are in constant communication with the Service Ontario and Ministry of Transportation regarding when this exemption will end, however there has not been a date set.
Regarding if you will get the year for free – We cannot answer this question as that will be dealt through the Ministry and Service Ontario.
To touch on your last question, IF your license plate sticker is past MARCH 2020, you are not required to renew your sticker at this time, if it expired PRIOR to this date you could be ticketed.
