The Chatham-Kent Police Service strongly encourages everyone to renew their licence plates on time.
CKPS is currently conducting a trial on Automated License Plate Readers (ALPRs) and has installed a select number of these devices in cruisers. Pending successful results from this pilot program, it is anticipated that all remaining cruisers will be equipped with ALPRs before the upcoming fall season. The implementation of these readers aims to strengthen road safety and enforcement efforts within our jurisdiction.
ALPRs are advanced devices that integrate high-resolution cameras and optical character recognition (OCR) technology. These systems are designed to seamlessly capture and interpret license plate information in real-time, converting it into digital text. By rapidly scanning and analyzing license plates, ALPRs greatly assist in identifying stolen vehicles, locating individuals with outstanding warrants, and enforcing traffic laws. Through the automation of the license plate reading process, ALPRs significantly improve operational efficiency, enabling prompt action by officers. These devices play a pivotal role in enhancing public safety, optimizing traffic management, and reducing emergency response times.
It is essential to note the offences and consequences related to license plate violations:
1. Driving with an invalidated permit:
– Fine: $85.00
– Total Payable: $110.00
2. Driving without a license:
– Set Fine: $260
– Total Payable: $365
3. Driving while under suspension:
– Arrestable offence with a scheduled court date
4. Using an unauthorized license plate:
– Arrestable offence with a scheduled court date
5. Possession of a stolen vehicle:

These measures are in place to ensure compliance with the law and maintain public safety on our roads.
