Chatham-Kent, Ontario: The Chatham-Kent Police Service responded to 193 calls for service in the last 24 hours. 8 people were arrested and two were on outstanding warrants.
Domestic – CK24045243/CK24045248
On Friday, September 13th, 2024, Chatham-Kent Police received information that a man was breaching his release conditions by communicating and living with his ex-girlfriend who he was on conditions not to be around or talk to. Police entered an investigation into the allegation and attended the Chatham residence where the female party was known to live.
Upon arrival, police located the man and women together inside of the residence.
The 41-year-old Chatham man was arrested and charged with failing to comply with a release order. The man was subsequently transported to police headquarters where he was held for a bail hearing.
The 40-year-old Chatham woman was also arrested and charged with facilitating a breach. She was transported to police headquarters where she was processed and released by way of an undertaking with a future court date of October 7th, 2024.
Bail violations – CK24045364
On Friday, September 13th, 2024, Chatham-Kent Police attended the area of Romney Township as it was reported that a male party, intoxicated by alcohol, was attempting to drive away from a residence. While en-route, police also learned that the subject male was bound by a curfew condition from a prior release order.
Prior to police arrival, the man decided against driving, but instead fled into a corn field.
After a search of the area with assistance of an unmanned aerial surveillance device, the male was located a distance away from the residence and placed under arrest.
The 39-year-old Tilbury man was charged with Failure to Comply with release order. He was transported to police headquarters for processing and held in custody pending a bail hearing.
Breach of probation/Theft – CK24045291/CK24045301
On Friday, September 13th, 2024, police received a call for service at local Chatham retail establishment stating that the loss prevention officer had a male party in custody for an attempted theft.
Upon arrival, a 47-year-old Chatham man was found to be in the custody of the loss prevention officer. Once the arrest was determined to be lawful, police took custody of the man and continued the arrest. Through a query of the male’s name, it was learned that the man was bound by a probation order to not attend the establishment.
The man was charged with theft under $5000, possession of property obtained by crime under $5000 and failing to comply with probation order. He was transported to police headquarters where he was processed and released on an undertaking with a future court date of October 21st, 2024.
Reminder: Rules when it comes to School Buses
With school back in session, Chatham-Kent Police Service would like to remind motorist the rules of the road with the increase bus traffic.
When driving on a road WITHOUT a median:
• drivers travelling in both directions must stop for a stopped school bus with its upper red lights flashing
• when you approach the bus from the front, stop at a safe distance to let children get on or off the bus and cross the road
• don’t move forward until the red lights have stopped flashing or the bus begins to move
When driving on a road WITH a median:
• traffic coming from the opposite direction is not required to stop.
Fines
Drivers can be charged if they pass a stopped school bus with its upper red lights flashing:
• First offence: $400 to $2,000 and six demerit points..
• Each following offence: $1,000 to $4,000, six demerit points and possible jail time (up to six months)
Vehicle owners can be charged if their vehicle illegally passes a stopped school bus, even if they weren’t driving.
