Black History – Sports
As an addition to the Sports post on Wednesday, we’d like to shine the spotlight on two youths making headlines and with a bright future ahead of them.
Caleb and CJ Roberts are grade 10 and 9 students at Ursuline College Catholic school. These young men have strong Canadian historical roots in the community of Chatham-Kent on their mother’s side and American roots on their fathers. Caleb and CJ Roberts have successfully represented the community of Chatham-Kent through basketball on a North American scale, such as playing for Team Canada, winning gold in a 15U National basketball championship, being named MVP, winning the Adidas Midwest circuit in 2019 and playing against NBA player teams (such as RJ Hamptons, Team Kyrie and Kendrick Perkins). Currently, they play on the Ursuline College Catholic school senior boys team. They also are very talented football players, playing for Football North.
When the pair were asked about their basketball success, both had similar answers. Caleb Roberts “I like the opportunity to meet new people, make new friends and winning. We’ve only lost one game this season at UCC.” Caleb added that his family inspires him, noting his grandfather (Douglas Wright), late grandmother (Michelle Wright), and parents, Amber and Chris Roberts.
When speaking about community, CJ Roberts stated that he likes that Chatham is a place where “everybody knows everybody.” Caleb and CJ Roberts added that athletics keeps them distracted from, quote, “bad stuff,” and the pair were generally thankful for their coaches, school and family support.
Chatham-Kent Police Services wishes both of them success in their future endeavours and are happy to showcase their community relationship.
They play tonight at 7:30 pm for the SWOSSA, and if they win, they go to the Ontario finals hosted by Sarnia Northern!
