The Chatham-Kent Police Service is reminding residents that while electric scooters (e-scooters) are becoming increasingly popular and readily available for purchase, the Municipality of Chatham-Kent has not currently opted into Ontario’s e-scooter pilot program. Under the provincial framework, municipalities must formally participate through local by-laws before e-scooters are permitted for use under the pilot.
As these devices continue to appear on local roadways, trails, and sidewalks, the Chatham-Kent Police Service has observed an increase in their use throughout the municipality. While e-scooters may be easily purchased through retail stores and online vendors, residents should be aware that ownership does not necessarily mean they can be legally operated on public property within Chatham-Kent.
The purpose of this campaign is to educate residents about the current regulations and promote safe and responsible transportation choices. Police recognize that many individuals may be unaware of the rules surrounding e-scooters and other emerging forms of personal transportation.
Residents are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the laws and municipal regulations governing the use of:
- Electric scooters (e-scooters)
- Electric bicycles (e-bikes)
- Other micro-mobility devices
The Chatham-Kent Police Service will continue to monitor the use of these devices throughout the municipality and engage in public education and enforcement where appropriate.
As new transportation technologies become more common, public safety remains our priority. We encourage all road users to understand the regulations that apply to their mode of transportation and to share the road responsibly.
