The Chatham‑Kent Police Service is aware of community concerns regarding the use of dirt bikes and other off‑road vehicles on trails in the Wheatley area, specifically the Arboretum Trail.
Off‑road vehicles operating on trails in an unsafe or unauthorized manner can pose a risk to pedestrians, cyclists and families using these shared spaces. The Police Service takes these concerns seriously and is working collaboratively with municipal partners to address the issue.
Under municipal by‑laws and provincial legislation, the operation of motorized vehicles on multi‑use pathways and trails is restricted and may result in fines. Additional charges may apply under the Highway Traffic Act and the Trespass to Property Act, depending on the circumstances.
Patrol officers and the Traffic Management Unit have been directed to monitor the area when resources permit. At this time, CKPS reminds the public that incidents must be reported to the Chatham‑Kent Police Service in order to support enforcement efforts. CKPS will continue to provide public education, conduct directed enforcement and work collaboratively with municipal partners to promote the safe use of community spaces on its social media platforms.
Anyone who witnesses unsafe or unauthorized off‑road vehicle activity is encouraged to contact the Chatham‑Kent Police Service at our non‑emergency number, 519‑436‑6600. Anonymous tips can also be submitted to Crime Stoppers at 1‑800‑222‑TIPS (8477). You can also make a report online at www.ckpolice.com.
