On January 22, 2026, at approximately 16:08 hrs, Chatham-Kent Police, Chatham-Kent Fire and Rescue and Medavie EMS responded to a tiered response at a residence at 99 McNaughton Avenue, Chatham, regarding an active fire inside the building.
Upon arrival, emergency responders located heavy smoke and extreme heat on the second floor, preventing immediate entry. The occupants of the building were safely evacuated and supported with temporary shelter assistance through the Municipality of Chatham-Kent and Emmanuel Baptist Church.
An investigation was initiated by the Chatham-Kent Police Service in partnership with the Ontario Fire Marshal’s Office and Chatham-Kent Fire and Rescue to determine the origin and cause of the fire. As a result of the investigation, the fire was determined to be arson and a suspect was identified.
On January 23, 2026, a 72-year-old male was located and arrested for Arson-Disregard for Human Life. The accused was transported to the Chatham-Kent Police Service Headquarters and held in custody. He is scheduled to appear in court on January 26, 2026.
No injuries were reported as a result of the fire. The fire was contained to one unit; however, additional units sustained smoke and water damage. The total damage is estimated at $250,000.
The investigation remains ongoing.
