Passenger vehicles, light commercial vehicles, motorcycle and mopeds
Owners of passenger vehicles, light commercial vehicles under 3,000 kg, motorcycles and mopeds must renew licence plates every 1 or 2 years, usually before your birthday. Expired licence plates are subject to enforcement action.
If you own one of these types of vehicles, when you renew:

• you do not have to pay licence plate renewal fees
• law enforcement will be instantly aware your licence plate was renewed
• failure to renew can result in a $110.00 charge for “Drive motor vehicle, no currently validated permit” under the Highway Traffic Act.
It’s the law to update your driver’s licence and vehicle permit (the green ownership document) within 6 days of a move. You can update your address online or by visiting a ServiceOntario centre.
