Join a critical frontline team supporting emergency response in our community. The Chatham‑Kent Police Service is seeking experienced and motivational individuals to join our Emergency Communication Centre as Emergency Communication Operators (ECOs).

Emergency Communication Operators are the first point of contact for 911 and non‑emergency calls. In this fast‑paced and high‑impact role, you will assess situations, dispatch police, fire, and EMS services, and provide vital communication support to frontline officers while helping to ensure timely and effective responses to the community.

Permanent Part-Time Emergency Communication Operator (ECO)

Location: Chatham-Kent Police HQ or Backup ECC – Chatham

Closing Date: Monday, August 24, 2026, at 09:00 hours

Core Responsibilities:
  • Answer 9-1-1, emergency, non-emergency, dedicated, and internal police lines; assess caller needs and take appropriate action, including answering inquiries, transferring calls, or coordinating an emergency response.
  • Collect necessary information from callers to assess situations and facilitate the appropriate police, fire, or emergency service response in accordance with policies and procedures, in a timely, professional, and courteous manner.
  • Handle, prioritize, and regularly reassess emergency and non-emergency calls, adjusting priorities as new information is received.
  • Enter incident information and required activity updates into the Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) system.
  • Dispatch police and fire units, maintain effective radio communication with officers, firefighters, service units, and personnel, and respond to requests from emergency responders.
  • Utilize computerized communication systems and related equipment to receive, assess, document, and convey information to emergency responders.
  • Acquire and direct requested resources to scenes, areas, operations, or events as required.
  • Conduct Canadian Police Information Centre (CPIC) and Records Management System (RMS) queries as requested.
  • Exhibit professionalism, composure, and sound judgment in high-pressure and stressful situations.
  • Meet and maintain core competency skills identified for Communicators by Ministry Standards – Regulation 3/99.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Essential Qualifications
  • Must be able to successfully complete job specific testing – Typing – minimum 40 words per minute
  • Successful applicants must provide a valid hearing certificate that indicates normal hearing as a minimum requirement; test at their own expense.
  • Successful applicants will be required to submit to and pass psychological testing at the expense of the Service.
  • Good working knowledge of excel and Microsoft word programs, computer skills
  • Applicants must undergo a multi-tasking assessment
  • Must be eligible to work in Canada
  • High School diploma or equivalent required
Beneficial Qualifications:
  • Familiarity with computer-aided dispatch (CAD) and record management systems.•
  • Completion of a recognized Public Safety Communications Course.
  • Experience in emergency response or high-stress call center environments is advantageous.
  • Knowledge of the geography and roadways of Chatham-Kent.
Employment Requirements:
  • Must complete an intensive, several-month training program, totalling approximately 600 hours, with both classroom and practical training components
  • Demonstrate and maintain competencies defined by the Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services Standards for a Communicator – Regulation 3/99.
  • Meet contractual obligations for hours of work assignments with reliable attendance. This includes working shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Ability to learn and adhere to established CKPS policies and procedures while demonstrating sound judgment within those frameworks
  • Complete contractual probation period for Communicators
