The Chatham-Kent Police Service (CKPS) is joining police services across Canada this Thanksgiving long weekend in support of Operation Impact 2026, a national road safety initiative focused on reducing preventable collisions, injuries and deaths on Canadian roads.
Led by the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police, Operation Impact takes place from October 9 to 12, 2026, combining public education with traffic enforcement and encouraging motorists to make safe and responsible decisions while travelling over the holiday weekend. This year’s theme is “Safety is in YOUR hands.”
Throughout the long weekend, CKPS officers will be paying particular attention to driving behaviours known to put motorists, passengers and other road users at risk, including:
- Alcohol and drug-impaired driving
- Fatigue-impaired driving
- Aggressive driving
- Distracted driving
- Seatbelt and child car seat violations Road safety continues to be a year-round priority for the Chatham-Kent Police Service. Previous CKPS road safety initiatives have similarly focused local enforcement efforts on impaired, aggressive and distracted driving, as well as seatbelt compliance.
With increased travel expected over the Thanksgiving long weekend, CKPS is asking motorists to do their part:
- Drive sober. Never operate a vehicle while impaired by alcohol or drugs.
- Slow down. Obey posted speed limits and adjust your driving to road and weather conditions.
- Put the phone away. Keep your attention on the road and avoid distractions.
- Buckle up. Ensure everyone in the vehicle is properly restrained.
- Plan ahead. Allow extra time to reach your destination and never drive when fatigued.
“Thanksgiving is a time for family and friends and we want everyone to arrive at their destination and return home safely. Every driver has a responsibility to make good decisions behind the wheel. Slow down, stay focused, drive sober and buckle up. Road safety is a shared responsibility and this weekend, safety truly is in your hands,” said Staff Sergeant Jason Herder.
The Chatham-Kent Police Service reminds motorists that safe roads begin with responsible choices. Officers will continue working throughout the Thanksgiving weekend to promote compliance with Ontario’s traffic laws and help keep Chatham-Kent roads safe for everyone.
Drive responsibly. Arrive safely. Enjoy a safe Thanksgiving weekend.
