The Chatham-Kent Police Service has arrested a 35-year-old Chatham woman in connection with a suspicious fire that occurred on July 14, 2026, at a vacant residence on Park Street. At approximately 6:33 hrs., on July 14, 2026, emergency services responded to multiple reports of a structure fire at a residence in the 100 block of Park Street in Chatham. Chatham-Kent Police Service officers attended alongside Chatham-Kent Fire Department personnel and Chatham-Kent EMS.

The fire originated at the rear of a vacant residence and quickly spread to two neighbouring properties. One of the neighbouring homes was occupied at the time by four residents who were asleep when the fire spread to their residence. All occupants were able to safely evacuate without injury.

As part of the investigation, officers obtained and reviewed surveillance video. The footage captured a female observed on the property prior to the fire, including in the area where the fire is believed to have originated. Additional video evidence showed the same individual on the property earlier that morning.

The investigation was conducted in partnership with the Ontario Fire Marshal’s Office. Investigators determined that the fire was intentionally set.

Through the review of surveillance footage, witness statements, and additional investigative steps, police identified a suspect. Investigators further linked the suspect to clothing and personal property observed in video footage recorded on multiple occasions.

On July 16, 2026, members of the Chatham-Kent Police Service located and arrested a 35-year-old Chatham woman. At the time of her arrest, officers recovered several items believed to be relevant to the investigation.

The accused has been charged with:

  • Arson – Damage to Property
  • Arson – Disregard for Human Life

The accused was held for bail proceedings
