The Training and Career Development Unit is part of the Operational Support Branch of the Chatham-Kent Police Service. This dedicated unit is comprised of one full-time Sergeant and three full-time Constables.

The Sergeant manages administrative responsibilities, including training records, course assignments, recruitment, and reintegration. The Constables focus on the practical training of both sworn officers and civilian staff. Each has completed specialized training at the Ontario Police College, including a one-week Effective Presentations course and a three-week intensive Use of Force Training program. All are certified Use of Force Trainers in the Province of Ontario.

Professional Development

Professional development is guided by mandatory training standards set by the Ministry. This includes:

  • Firearms training (pistol and C8)
  • Defensive tactics
  • Suspect apprehension pursuits & police vehicle operations
  • Conductive Energy Weapon (CEW) training
  • De-escalation techniques
  • Mental health crisis response training

Personal Development

Personal growth is encouraged through physical fitness and academic achievement. Officers are supported in:

  • Participating in the Ontario Police Fitness Award Program and the CKPS Fitness Challenge.
  • Pursuing further education through the Education Reimbursement Program.

Many members have completed or are currently working toward college diplomas, university degrees, and graduate-level studies.

The Training and Career Development Unit plays a vital role in enhancing the skills, knowledge, and capabilities of our members, supporting the Chatham-Kent Police Service’s commitment to excellence. We proudly embrace a philosophy of lifelong learning, empowering our personnel through continuous professional and personal development.
