Traffic Services
The Chatham-Kent Police Traffic Unit is part of the Patrol Support Section within the Police Service. This seven member unit include one sergeant and six constables. The members of this unit are highly trained officers who specialize in a variety of traffic related fields.
While traffic enforcement is the generally recognized role that people see us doing it is just one of the many areas that this unit works in. The use of moving and stationary radar units, unmarked cars and a speed measuring laser unit help the members to enforce some of the speed limits as well as various other traffic laws. Additionally we work with other agencies in conducting joint enforcement; the MTO for a commercial vehicle blitz is likely the most visible of these roles.
All members of the unit are specifically trained in collision investigation. Additionally four of the members are further trained in
collision reconstruction. Beyond basic collision reconstruction training officers also have additional courses that cover collision investigation and reconstruction involving commercial vehicles, motorcycles and pedestrians. Using our Sokkia Total Station officers can make accurate measurements of collision, and crime, scenes and using this data can create accurate scale drawings for court presentations.
Our fleet of vehicles includes a Yukon XL (donated by the Ridge Landfill Community Trust) and Dodge Charger cars equipped with a "Hemi" motor. We also have two new 2008 Harley Davidson motorcycles, and one older Harley, that are used for patrol as well as escort functions.
Members of our unit compete in the annual Great Lakes Police Motorcycle Training Seminar, which we hosted in 2005. Members attending this event receive several days of training and practice for their skills, and on the final day are tested as part of a competition.
Members of this unit also train new members of the service in the use of radar equipment and traffic duties surrounding basic enforcement, traffic direction, and collision investigation.
