October: Cyber Security Awareness Month
October is Cyber Security Awareness Month, and while Canadians continue to fall victim to a number of online scams, the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre remains dedicated to assisting in the prevention and fight against Cybercrime. This fraud bulletin: http://www.antifraudcentre-centreantifraude.ca/fraud-escroquerie/cyber-eng.htm was prepared to help Canadians recognize, reject and report these scams.
The Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre (CAFC): http://www.antifraudcentre-centreantifraude.ca/index-eng.htm is the central agency in Canada that collects information and criminal intelligence on such matters as mass marketing fraud (e.g., telemarketing), advance fee fraud (e.g., West African letters), Internet fraud and identification theft complaints.
The Chatham-Kent Police Service continues to receive calls regarding a variety of scams. The following are three recent scams brought to the attention of police:
– An e-mail instructing a person to click on a certain link. By doing so, this person would then be entitled to a refund on an e-transfer.
– A letter instructing a person to reply by way of e-mail with their personal banking information to obtain a large sum of money.
– Telephone calls instructing people to call a certain number pertaining to their debt. And that criminal charges will apply if they do not call the number provided.
Please be mindful of unfamiliar long distance telephone calls. CKPS encourages everyone to click on the above mentioned links. This information is valuable and may save you or someone you love from becoming a victim of a fraud.
