The Chatham-Kent Police Service responded to 181 calls for service in the last 24 hours. Seven people were arrested.
Pair Caught Driving a Stolen Van CK18043047
Shortly after 4:00 a.m. this morning, an officer on general patrol observed a van driving on Sandys Street in Chatham with plates that were not authorized for the vehicle. The officer initiated a traffic stop and learned that the vehicle was stolen. Both the male driver and female passenger were arrested. A search of the vehicle produced methamphetamine, a digital scale and can of bear spray that was tested and found to be in working order.
The 33-year-old Chatham man has been charged with three counts of driving while under suspension, driving while disqualified, possession of property obtained by a crime under $5000, possession of a prohibited weapon, unauthorized possession of a prohibited weapon in a motor vehicle, two counts of failing to comply with his Prohibition Order, two counts of failing to comply with his Probation Order, three counts of failing to comply with conditions of his Recognizance of Bail and possession for the purposes of trafficking.
The 24-year-old Chatham woman has been charged with possession of property obtained by a crime under $5000, possession of a prohibited weapon, unauthorized possession of a prohibited weapon in a motor vehicle and possession for the purposes of trafficking.
The stolen vehicle has been returned to the registered owner.
Both have been held in custody pending a bail hearing.
Man Charged with Assault with a Weapon CK18042989
Last night, police responded to a disturbance at a residence in Chatham. An argument between a man and woman, known to each other, escalated into a physical altercation as the man threw a hatchet resulting in the handle striking the woman in the head.
The 57-year-old Chatham man was arrested and charged with being in possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose and assault with a weapon.
He has been held in custody pending a bail hearing.
CK18042943 – Just before 2:00 p.m. yesterday afternoon, police located a woman who was wanted for failing to attend court. The 26-year-old Chatham woman was arrested on the outstanding warrant and transported to the Courthouse pending a bail hearing.
CK18042958 – Shortly after 3:00 p.m. yesterday afternoon, officers located a man wanted for breaching his release conditions. Jeffrey Campbell, 25 years, of Edgar Street in Chatham was charged with three counts of failing to comply. He was released pending a future court date of October 2, 2018.
CK18042999 – Around 7:30 p.m. last night, police located a man wanted for failing to attend court. The 39-year-old Chatham man was arrested on the outstanding warrant and has been held in custody pending a bail hearing.
